What is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is the first FDA-approved and most popular injectable for reducing fine lines in the facial area. It contains the botulinum toxin (onabotulinumtoxinA), a neurotoxin that prevents nerves from communicating with muscles. This effect temporarily relaxes the facial muscles around the injection site and visibly reduces the appearance of any facial lines and wrinkles for several months. Neurotoxins can also be injected preventatively to stop the lines from forming in the first place.

Thanks to Botox’s immense popularity, multiple neurotoxins are now on the market. One is Dysport, which is specifically approved for the treatment of glabellar lines, or vertical lines between the eyebrows.

In addition to cosmetic uses, neurotoxins have several medical purposes. They can treat migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain in the jaw, hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating and more.

Botox Treatment Areas

Botox and other neurotoxins are usually injected into different zones of the face and neck. At your consultation, your provider will go over each area to discuss how Botox might be beneficial to each.

Forehead and brows

Botox injections can help with the appearance of forehead wrinkles, act as a brow lift, treat crow’s feet around your eyes and reduce glabellar lines, or frown lines, between your brows. 

Lower Face

Botox can smooth out the wrinkles and creases around the lips known as laugh lines. It’s also frequently injected into the masseter, the jaw muscle responsible for chewing. Relaxing an overstimulated masseter can both solve jaw pain and slim the face.

Another use is the Botox lip flip, in which the Botox is injected above the upper lip to relax that muscle and create the appearance of fuller lips.

Neck

Botox can be injected into the upper neck for a “Nefertiti lift,” which defines the chin and jawline. It’s also used in the platysma, the thin layer of muscle over your throat, to prevent the tense vertical lines called platysmal bands.

Underarms and hands

As a treatment for hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, Botox is injected in a grid-like pattern to the affected areas. The neurotoxin relaxes overactive sweat glands to temporarily solve this common issue.

Botox-Type Injectable Brands We Offer

Currently, we offer two neurotoxin brands at Studio 360 Med Spa.

Botox Cosmetic

The original injectable neurotoxin, Botox was first FDA-approved in 2002 and since has become the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world. Well-studied, effective and extremely safe, Botox treats moderate to severe wrinkles and has multiple medical uses.

Dysport

Dysport is a different formulation of onabotulinumtoxinA. It contains fewer proteins and is believed to reduce the risk of therapy failure, i.e., developing a tolerance to the injections. Dysport is FDA-approved for glabellar lines but is often used off-label for the same purposes as Botox Cosmetic.

Ideal Candidates for Botox-Type Injectables

Good candidates for neurotoxin injections are men and women who are:

• Aged 18 and up 
• Dissatisfied with their fine lines and wrinkles or wish to prevent them from developing
• In good general physical health
• Not pregnant or breastfeeding

Before & Afters

Two days after treatment, you’ll see a visible reduction in severe lines around the area and your skin will have a smoother appearance. Within a week you will see complete results when any bruising, redness, and swelling have subsided. Your skin takes on a youthful, smooth appearance, with fewer wrinkles. 

What to Expect from Your Botox Treatment

Prepare yourself for treatment by refraining from using alcohol, aspirin, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and tobacco as these can increase your risk of bruising and bleeding. If you’re on blood thinning medication, talk to both our team and your health care provider before scheduling a Botox appointment.

Upon arrival at Studio 360 Med Spa, you’ll be greeted by our friendly reception staff. They will check you in for your appointment and provide you with any necessary paperwork to fill out, including medical history and consent forms. This is also a good time to mention any questions or concerns you might have regarding your treatment.

Next, you’ll meet with one of our experienced and licensed practitioners. They’ll review your paperwork, discuss your aesthetic goals, and assess your overall health and skin condition. It’s essential to be open and honest about your medical history and expectations during this consultation, especially if it’s your first time getting Botox. Based on the consultation, the practitioner will design a personalized treatment plan that best suits your needs and desired results.

Before starting the treatment, the practitioner will clean the areas of injection to prevent infection. If you’re concerned about potential discomfort during the procedure, a topical numbing cream may be applied, although this is typically unnecessary as Botox injections cause minimal discomfort.

Once your skin is prepared, the practitioner will carefully administer the Botox injections using a very fine needle. The procedure involves injecting small amounts of Botox into specific muscles in your face. The number of injections will depend on various factors, including the extent of the area being treated. The process is relatively quick and typically takes 10–20 minutes.

Recovery and aftercare

It’s generally recommended to avoid touching the treated area for a few hours and refrain from lying down or doing strenuous activities for the rest of the day. Mild side effects like bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site are possible but usually subside within a few days.

A follow-up appointment is often scheduled two weeks after the treatment to assess the results and decide if additional injections are necessary.

FAQs

Is Botox toxic?

Botox is a neurotoxin, but that doesn’t mean it’s toxic. It’s been FDA-approved for medical purposes since 1989 and when injected in small quantities, is considered very safe.

Can I do facial exercises and get the same results?

If performed regularly, facial exercises can slightly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and other lines. However, they’re not as effective as Botox-type injectables and won’t create as dramatic results.

Which neurotoxin will be best for me?

It depends on what your treatment objectives are and what area you’re looking to treat. We’ll discuss your aesthetic goals at your consultation to determine which brand will be most effective for you.

How often do I have to get injections?

Many of our patients choose to receive Botox every 3–4 months to maintain their youthful, wrinkle-free look. Some people find that over time, their Botox lasts longer as their formerly overworked muscles acclimate to the new, more relaxed state.
